I'm hoping Graeme will do a "Tom Chambers" and set the place alight. It's quite a large hope I do readily admit. He's rather a large unit to twirl about in a top hat. One never know thought, does one? Neutral

Tango- was never struck on Tom myself- he was an actor and could deliver a good performance or sure but I was never convinced it was sincere or that he really felt the joy of the dance. Graeme on the other hand loves the whole thing and though technically lacking his genuine joi de vivre and enthusiasm shines through. He even loved that awful salsa for goodness sake!

Jingle- yes me too! I'm actually watching with friends tonight with plenty of wine and goodies :-) And yes -Ashes for the 40. And may be a surprise 39 - like Stacey?

I think Graeme would take his old team-mates performance at Blackpool a few years back (well it was held at Wembley then):-

A great example of why everybody should take up ballroom dance. They won't, granted...but they should. Brilliant Michael. Wink

I think it is very much on the cards but depends on whether CRH breaks his self imposed rule of not awarding any '10's until at least the quarter finals.

I think it is going to be a great show - I'm out tonight so the show will have to be late night or Sunday morning for me...……………. Enjoy it folks - looking forward to everyone's comments...……. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Gio has been so strange this year. I know he has always been one to push his partners but he seemed to have a much more relaxed relationship with Debbeh last year. Lately - he is coming across as really hard on interviews and not really having any sort of laugh with Faye - perhaps there is no love lost behind the scenes but as the competition has progressed I find their relationship and chemistry increasingly strange.

Re: the dances that the couples have left to do:

Quite a few rumbas left to do - I wonder how many will dodge this one? Joe is the only one left who has not done the 'Couples Choice' - I wonder whether he will do it this week?

I think that Graeme and Lauren have some difficult ones ahead for them - likewise Charles. Otheres seem to have quite a good choice left.

I think if Graeme, Charles or Lauren land the Rumba this week they are toast. They have to avoid that dance to stay afloat. For me though they ate all living on borrowed time as Ashley, Faye, Joe and Stacey look nailed on finalists and have done for a few weeks now.

Again, the only one I have a few doubts about is Lauren and Aj's tune - it's very slow for a Sals. Obvs a salsa can be danced slow, but much easier when it is more up tempo if you are a beginner. Also... were Liam Payne and Mr Balvin seperated at birth?

And...OMG! affraid How much is Kevin going to throw at that Paso? The kitchen sink certainly isn't safe, but I fear for all the bathroom porcelain too.... pale

And Joe has got a real crowd-pleaser and it fits the style of dance perfectly, so he's alright. Again.

Faye and Joe Varney - a bit snoozey, but right mood and tempo. As long as she wears a lovely wafty frock with NO NUDE INSERTS I shall be happy.... (Sleeve wafts optional but would love to see them).

Graeme and Oti have a corker. Now let's see how much it gets messed up...

Was a bit worried by Ellie Rigby, but this version really should work. Except, you know.... Karen.

Ashley get's Ramp's iconic tune. But she WILL do it justice. Of course she will Rolling Eyes

I should probably start a whole new thread for this 'which dance does Diamonds see before her eyes when she hears a tune'.....

Just heard Michael Bubble's version of Help Me Make It Through The Night (with some women callled Lauren somebody or other - guess it's not Steadman adding another string to her rather crowded bow....) and now I can't UNsee a Rumba. A horrible, sinuous, undulating Rumba. It is not even a dance, is it? It's just a series of poses connected by some earnest writhing.

I can't believe it is included in normal Latin competition, but why it is included in Strictly any more is beyond me - we now have a plethora of 'speciality' dances which are (mostly) much more pleasing, so there is no need for it. Nobody wants to do it - it is the dance of DOOOOOOOOM for most people - and it is an unsightly watch for the most part even when pros and ringahs do it. I notice no one is doing a rumba this week... Time to get rid.

But now I am going to see one everytime I hear his Bubble-ness. Oh deep joy pale

Not stalking you D&P, but talking Rumba (great as music, rubbish in a ballroom) I really think this could be a terrific piece of music done by real dancers....There are many versions, and probably better known for Bossa Nova,  I just love this one:

First thoughts from that is that Lauren has drawn the shortest straw of those in the danger zone. Graeme has a Quickstep to a decent piece of music. I suppose Charles may drop back into the dance-off today as the Tango is a disciplined dance. Ashley with a dream piece of music just to make it ultra easy and Faye should be very happy with her dance and music. I won't see this week's show until Monday so I will have to avoid you all over this weekend. Enjoy.

Oh Diamonds - If I was ever I was on SCD in a parallel universe then this would be the dance that I would want to do. Did you not see Luba and Johannes's sublime demonstration on ITT last night? it was beautiful and danced to Samba pa ti which I think is one of the best tracks for it. It is an old dance and simply a slow latin dance - and I think one of the issues on SCD is that over the years it has been built up into something it is not -namely a series of placed moves and overdone 'drapery' complete with ugly floor sweeps - so half the time we don't really see the proper dance and it has kind of got a reputation of having to be 'sexy' why? The music is often just not right and makes it almost like a contemporary 'Burn the Floor' 'rumba style' n umber which doesn't lend itself to the flowing nature of the dance and lastly I think it is a very challenging dance and their probably isn't the time to learn it properly in a week but I like to see them have a go and I think there should be something challenging on SCD.

On the subject of dances and music. My heart sank when I heard Lauren and AJ's track - awful again - but Ian said on ITT tonight that the routine was really interesting, so who knows? I think she is going to need the public support this week especially as Ashley and Pasha have a monster of a track (which I love) to do their samba and will no doubt 'lead' the latin dances this week.

Not sure about Charles and Karen and this particular version of 'Eleanor Rigby' - also he didn't have good posture and stance on ITT training footage tonight - he needs to nail this one or I fear he could be in danger as Graeme and Oti have the classic crowd pleasing music and will no doubt have some impressive choreography.

I think Faye will smash the waltz as she has done some beautiful ballroom dances - not sure if Stacey will fully crack the paso but with 'Malaguena' you can't go far wrong and it will be great, as always, to hear it on SCD - I'll look forward to that one Mr T!

Lastly - 'Jump Around' is a great party tune - but I just think of me and my friends having a drunken and manic 'jump around' to it on a sweaty dance floor - they need to make it work as a show n umber

I seem to have missed that! I must have gone to put the kettle on or... Will look it out on i-player.

I accept entirely your point about it simply being a slower latin dance, but actually if you look at old clips of it done in Cuba it isn't a particularly slow dance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stUyIFa3DA4 (dancing starts at about 7:00) but it became something else entirely once it was taken as part of the latin competition set. Thus it is not just SCD that makes it a dance of placed moves and overt sexy-ism (not a word but... it'll do), but the competition circuit too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRD4TJsvth4 (That was Our Very Own Shirl in 1986). It was the very kind of thing that Strictly Ballroom was sending up - and has been going on since the 1970s. SCD is just following that lead. And Our Shirl and Corky looked just as awful as anyone on SCD - in fact I would go as far as saying that Sophie and Ashleigh look a lot less hideous doing it than Our Shirl - that performance makes me shudder.

And this knowingly sends it up too, from inside SCD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiX0bSspyQs&t=2s (Conversely I can watch this again and again!)

But each to their own, I expect there are dances I like you shudder at!

Post  diamondsandpearls on Tue Nov 27, 2018 3:14 pm

Now that me and Sid are back together again (= stalking him on Twitter) I have got wind of rumours that Joe gets to dance the Salsa to a Joseph (geddit? How unlike the producers to be so literal) megamix. The original is 8 mins long so my head has imploded trying to imagine how they're going to cut that to 90 seconds.

Also, Ashley gets Don't Rain on my Parade (and put me in the dance off). How very apt. She is attempting an AS to this little number. As the wonderful Heidi Stephens of the Guardian said: 'nothing says American Smooth like the lament of a rock-bottom prostitute.' (Yup, stalking her too...)

The rest haven't been posted on Twitter, but given that, they must all be fairly sensible as they are not being twittered  or wittered about.

I still miss Sid being here. It's like having a long distance relationship...

Post  diamondsandpearls on Tue Nov 27, 2018 7:36 pm

Well, the dances are up on the Strictly website, so here they are (a simple cut and paste job so no doubt will be a bit wobbly bobbly..):

Ashley and Pasha Quickstep to 'Don’t Rain on My Parade' from Funny Girl
Charles and Karen Rumba to 'Maria' from West Side Story
Faye and Giovanni Charleston to 'Lonely Goatherd' from the Sound of Music
Joe and Dianne perform a Salsa to 'Joseph Megamix' from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Lauren and AJ American Smooth to 'I’m in Love with a Wonderful Guy' from South Pacific
Stacey and Kevin also American Smooth to 'I Dreamed a Dream' from Les Misérables.

Oh... no actually- it's fine Very Happy

Anyway. I think I always seem to get a post-Blackpool grump because I was certainly in a mood after Saurday's rubbish marking and the tunes that some of the dances had to be shoe-horned into, and this little lot isn't sweetening me one iota.

No-one loves pre-1960 musicals as much as me. No-one. And I even like some of the ones made in the 1960s. After that I'm really not interested. So that rules out Les Mis and Joseph. So let's concentrate on the others...

Of all the dance-tastic tunes to choose from West Side Story they go with the schmaltz that is Maria (it's the one song in the whole film I have to fast-froward, sorry). They should have found another song from another musical for the Rumba and given a more envigorating number for an upbeat Latin dance. Which basically means Joe and the Salsa (Mambo is a forerunner/sister of Salsa so that might be the one...?). As Mauve knows, I hate the Rumba anyway, so this is a waste of a good musical - pick something from a musical I don't care about like Les Mis for a rumba.

Sound of Music was set in Nazi Austria. So absolutely perfect for a dance of the Bright Young Things and the Jazz Age, ie the 1920s, no? NO!! I was being scathingly sarcastic, should anyone have any doubts. It is wrong on SO many levels my head is spinning. I DON'T CARE if it is the right tempo (and I have my doubts), it is just not appropriate.

The AS to the South Pacific song is completely wasted on AJ. He hasn't a clue about the musical - thinks it was from the 80's for goodness sakes. Otherwise, a VW-based American smooth to this could have had potential. We shall see, but I don't hold up much hope. It will be over-themed (but have nothing to do with the original) and overly lift-tastic.

Which leaves Ashley and the QS to Rain on My Parade, which, depsite my earlier post is looking like the best of a bad bunch.

The saccherine thing from Les Mis will go down well with most folk as at least it has an appropriate tempo, although I am not sure about energetic lifts. And as most of the Salsas on this year's Strictly have been Salsamchas or Salsiscos I suppose it doesn't really matter that it is being done to a megamix of songs about a biblical character. Is it just me who finds this, well, deeply weird?

They wasted the Trolley song from Meet me in St Louis (a huge favourite of mine which I will be re-watching about a week before Christmas) on a terrible routine which invoked weapon of love Van Dyke and Mary Poppins. An AS to this would have been spectacular.

There are SO many amazing musicals to choose from, with amazing songs. Joanne Clifton to her credit understood that you need to go with the classic favourites and, whilst putting your own mark on the choreography, evoke the flavour of it. I am happy to accept that most folk would find Maria a stunning ballad so I will let that go, but not before re-iterating that there are so many banging tunes from West Side story which could have been better purposed for an epic latin number. On the Town, Easter Parade, Me and My Gal, every Fred and Ginge one, Bandwagon, Royal Wedding, every Gene Kelly one, Calamity Jane, High Society, Gentleman Prefer Blondes - I could go on and on and on.... But all the producers have to do is google MGM Musicals form the Golden Age. Simples. And, yes, for all you older folks out there, you can have some stuff from the 70's and 80s. But I don't have to like it....
