Re: Other TV programmes you like or loathe
Anyone see Stranded! The Andes Plane Crash Survivors – Storyville on BBC 2 last Wednesday ?
OMG what a fantastic story. I recorded it and sat up into the early hours not being able to pull myself away. What an horrendous situation to be in, despite having survived. It must be everyone's nightmare. The strength of human endurance is unbelievable - the terrain they scaled in arctic conditions in such a weak state defies belief, the bonding of the group and the agonizing processes of the terrible decisions that had to be made, was truly awesome. The emotional reuniting of the survivors and relatives of the deceased 30 years on made for compelling viewing. I can't rate it highly enough.
But I have two complaints.
One: and the most annoying, is that the English subtitles were lost against the whiteness of the snow. I was forever pausing and going back to squint at the screen so I didn’t miss a single word. Two: sometimes the text didn’t stay on the screen long enough to read it all.
Already previously shown, I hope they bring it back - this time improved subtitles.

I intend to watch that on iplayer Lucielle. Was the film "Alive" based on this story? I saw it many years ago and it's stayed with me to this day.
Anyone into Masterchef? I'm hoping either Andrew or Shelina wins, but fear it may be Tom who I find VERY dull indeed.

Hi Sid, yes it is. I didn't know the answer so looked it up on Wikipedia. Here is the link. I don't know how I missed it, but I knew nothing of this story before I saw the TV programme. A book was also written and the link describes what the survivors thought of it and the author's response.

I really don't know why I watch the Jonathan Ross show. He's so smarmy and condescending to his guests - finishing his interview with Sarah Millican by saying "you exceeded my expectations". Who does he think he is ?
I was struck by how Gok Wan (another of his guests on Saturday) resembles Will Young, vaguely in looks, but very much in voice, expression, and mannerisms. Who would have thought it.

Re: Other TV programmes you like or loathe
Anyone watching Britain's Got Talent ? I'm quite enjoying it The addition of David Walliams to the judges' panel is a good one. I like his brand of natural humour and, to my knowledge, no crudeness thus far ! I am pleasantly surprised by Alesha, having gone off her on SCD mainly because she so blatantly took Arlene's place, but she (Alesha) was looking for career progression - she's got it now - much more suited to general variety, imo. On the other hand, Arlene looks strangely quaint these days. Funny how things turn around.
I've been trying to watch The voice, too. It's soooo long-winded and, admire Tom Jones as I do, I am squirming, constantly looking at his face trying to decide whether to turn round or not. And when none of them picked Kerry Ellis as a potential star, I gave up ! Her Defying Gravity is one of my favourite songs - she is utterly superb ! Ho-hum....

Hi Lucielle i haven't really got into BGT as i sat through a few dancing dog, jugglers, greek fat couple
& thought yuk!
David Walliams is a funny bloke but to me he is a little slimy sometimes. I wouldn't watch
BGT now as snort face now a judge there sorry i disliked A intensly as SCD Judge.
The Voice im stiill in debate like the concept i would prefer judges be in different parts
so they only knew which other judge wanted the act only by turning around.
I am hoked on Homelands! Damien playing a blinder of a part! Carrie now sleeping
with the guy wow talk about taking your job home with you & going the extra mile!
I have thought Brodie a baddie but im also wondering about Saul!

I didn't tune into this as it looked as if it was about fighting and war - pity because I think Damian Lewis is a great actor.saxonsiren wrote:I am hoked on Homelands! Damien playing a blinder of a part! Carrie now sleeping

Re: Other TV programmes you like or loathe
I love Homeland.
Who would have anticipated the twist at the end of this week's episode ?
Anyone watching Alcatraz ? I like it, but the pace of the show puts me off somewhat. In as much as there's a lot of build up to the back story about the inmate and then boom ! the detective figures everything out in 20 seconds flat. Entertaining though because Hurley from Lost is in it. He will always be Hurley to me.

Re: Other TV programmes you like or loathe
I am watching Alcatraz too. I do like the concept & loved the twist of the female Dr being the same age & treating same patients as in 1963! However why does only one inmate at a time appear back? Why do they not appear in Alcatraz itself? The first one did but only for the viewer to get the connection between past & present.
Hurley will always be Hurley but why is he involved? apart from being abused & a avid Alcatraz fan! Maybe he is
a secret inmates son? Also if they get all the inmates back will the female cop cease
to exist? as her grandfather an inmate
Is Sam O'Neil also from the past? Has he aged or stayed the same age?
I would prefer maybe an inmates disappearence & story over several episodes to build tension.
A bit bored by Alcatraz but staying with it
Homeland omg the twist Brodie inocent his friends death staged?
Walker the baddie? noooo & why oh why in american sex scenes do they wake
up still in their underwear!!

Dancing with the Stars Australia
Greetings from 'Down Under'
Amazingly, we've now been living here for over 6 months and we're Poms in Paradise! Love the scenery, beaches, weather, people and lifestyle but most of the TV is cr*p!
Luckily we have Foxtel and can get some UK progs but not Strictly. The good news is that the Aussie version - called Dancing with the Stars here too, started last night.
I don't know any of the professional dancers and only a couple of the 'celebs' but its very watchable and I don't have to put up with Brucies dreadful jokes. Tess's job is done by MEL B!!! Bit crude at times and her accent is the pits so I think she'll be another Aleysha for me. The Aussies seem to like her though and the presenters don't phaff around wasting time. Only 3 judges too who seem to know their stuff and have a varied vocabulary too - think they will upset a few as the series progresses. Much more low key programme than the UK (or USA) but that's Sunday nights sorted for the Autumn/Winter for us.

Re: Other TV programmes you like or loathe
For anyone who doesn't mind subtitles, I'd definitely recommend The Bridge, the latest Scandinavian crime series on Saturday nights, BBC4/BBCHD.
Think the first two episodes are on iplayer (you'd need to watch them first, then there's four more weeks of double episodes). Storyline starts with a womans body found on the bridge between Denmark and Sweden (so cops from both countries have to work together). It's all quite dark and grisly, but a compelling story so far and interesting characters. Not sure what it is about Scandinavian TV, but they do crime so well.

Sounds intruiging! I did start watching the Killing but by week six gave up! Which appears to be a
wrong decision as my friends became hooked by the series! When it is
repeated i shall stay the distance! Ill check i player re The Bridge.
Adore Homeland& is Brodie now a goodie pretending to be a baddie? or playing both
sides for a different motive? Arghhhh its intense.

Re: Other TV programmes you like or loathe
The Killing was quite slow paced at times, but definitely worth perservering with Sax (the Danish version I mean, I watched a couple of episodes of the american remake and it looked very weak in comparison).
I think there's plans to remake The Bridge in english, but imo no-one can beat the Scandinavians for their dark atmospheric TV crime. The two main cops in the Bridge are really interesting - the Swedish female cop is a single workaholic with Aspergers, and the Danish cop is a weary family man with great intuition. It's a bit of a new angle on the police partnership story...and so far so good.

Oooh Sax, not sure if Brodie is a goody or a baddy either. All I know is that he is getting on my wick a bit.....is he pretending to go along with Nasir or has he really turned ? Also I am wondering who the mole is. It has to be Saul or the Muslim guy at the CIA surely ? My OH thinks it's the top dog, the black guy in charge !!
Another programme I have been totally into is The Walking Dead. I didn't think it would be my thing, but started watching series one with my daughter and I love it. Can't wait for series three and Andrew Lincoln is great in the role of Rick.

Tomps i agree re mole theory & I feel Saul has a huge secret! He did after all fail
the lie detector & his mysterious history with Carrie? Also we haven't anymore of
the white female terrorist-forgot her name! Also the connection from The Saudi Princes' staff he killed
the high class escort for her jewellery!Too many loose ends but compulsive!

Re: Other TV programmes you like or loathe
I have to say that, after watching BGT, Alesha has finally found her niche. She livens up the show with her bright smile and friendly outlook, even her laugh fits in well with this show. I would never have believed this a short while ago.
I really enjoyed Saturday's show with one reservation that now and again they are cutting to behind the scenes clips during acts, which is quite frustrating, especially as there was an excellent jazz group called The Jive Aces whose act was interrupted in this way. I hope when we get to the live shows (next week) we shall see their full performance. Looking forward to this immensely.

Does the list for BGT accidently get leaked by a mole or in fact Simon Cowell? After
all he doesswear by any publicity is good publicity!
Frankly i feel Simon has had his day & needs new ideas/shows
I don't watch BGT as never floated my boat!

I'm enjoying BGT - now that the finalists are performing, it's as good as any professional variety show. I ff through all the hype and adverts. The X-factor has had its day as far as I'm concerned. There has to be a better way to look for vocal talent. The Beeb found a different format which has proved a success. X-Factor has been declining for a couple of years now following action that deprived the winner of the "guaranteed" Christmas No.1 - hooray! I'd like to see something different dominating prime-time viewing during the winter months!

Is anyone watching Maestro at the opera? I'd only intended to watch the first few minutes to see how CRH got on, but ended up fascinated by it. CRH put so much effort into his performance, he'd virtually melted by the end (though I think the mathematician will probably win). If you didn't watch it, I'd definitely recommend it on iplayer
