Right here are my thoughts on last night's show. Generally, a lot of good to very good dances with a handful of weak dances and average ones. Sadly, a lot of the dances had that annoying faffing around at the start. Overall I enjoyed the Movie Night a lot.

Simon - His Quickstep was not too bad. It was good in places but perhaps a little unsteady and clumsy in places. 6

Ruth - Her Rumba just didn't not have enough curves and fluidity or feeling in it. Not a dance disaaaster darling though. 5.5

Molly - A good American Smooth. She moved well and had good armography and nice choreography from AJ. Looks like she will be around well into the second half of the series. 7

Richard - A Paso Doble full of too much campness for me. It was technically his best dance so far but a lot of stomping throughout. 5

Debbie - Too much faffing at the start but very good once she got started. 7.5

Brian - Brian's American Smooth was his best so far. It contained some nice steps and the goofy character suited him to a tee and got the characterisation spot on. Enjoyable. 6.5

Gemma - Her Charleston's only real blemish was the faffing at the start. Great once she got going and captured the flavour of the dance nicely. 7.5

Charlotte - Faffing at the start again but I thought she was pretty competent once underway (despite what judges said). Only C.raig never really lambasted her. Her best dance. 6

Jonnie - His Paso Doble was very good. Good tempo and in the flavour of the dance. Good lines at times less so at others. Generally very good. 7

Susan - Her Samba was better than I expected. She kept up a good tempo and created a good flavour of the dance but there was a lack of bounce and sway. 5.5

Joe - Another dance with too much faffing at the start. However, once underway he showed great posture and improved dance from last week. 7

Aston - Again too much faffing at the start. Once he began another top notch dance but as he is a ringer it was met by ...meh from me. Sorry. 8.5

Alexandra - An American Smooth of high quality. Polished dance from another (meh) ringer. 8

Davood - At times this was a very good dance. Showed great hip movements and looks like a contender with more improvement. 7.5

To summarise the celebs in danger this week should be Richard, Ruth and perhaps Susan.

H all

I enjoyed last night but also found it all a bit childish . K aren C lifton is so over the top in the Claudatorium and flinging popcorn etc was just plain silly . She needs to calm down a bit .
I wont comment on technical issues and am now after ten years only really able to recognise what they are dancing .I still mix up my samba and cha cha etc !

I am now bored of the comedy ones , the REv blends in with all the other ones now and he lacks the charm and grace to be even funny for me .

Now to my as Marian Keys says my " for and agins "

Debbie was beautiful but oh boy she does not take criticism very well and I sense a very steely and determined lady under that smile
Alexandra the same , very media savy and very clued into how to react and be and how the public works .Having said that I find her and Gorka mesmorising .
Barbie and Ken ( aka ) Nadya and Davood are for some reason make me tune out for a moment .I dont know they seem just so driven to please
I actually made a cuppa while Brian was on , I cannot take to him at all and just no interest in watching him .

Jonnie is lovely but I was a bit meh last night , he seemed a bit bored himself by the end !
I love Mollie and Gemma and Joe and love how they improve and want to learn , that is what I enjoy best about Strictly and would love those three in the final for that reason .

For me Susan , Charlotte , REv , Ruth , Brian , are all just fodder to fill in the time until the real runners pick up speed so any my feeling is they will all go one by one now

I loved Shirley until last night and found her teacher like and far too serious although B rendan needed a slap down for his awful "My dear " comment and he made Charlotte and the audience very uncomfortable. I really dont like to feel uncomfortable watching Strictly and Charlotte make me worry and fret that she will crumble in a weeping mess in the middle of a dance .

If it was a vote for leaving I would vote out Brian , Rev, Charlotte , Susan , Ruth , Simon in that order

Snap! They'd be my pick for the final as well Tappingfeet. The more likely prospect of a showdown between Aston, Alexandra and Debbie just doesn't appeal to me one bit.

Hi Tappingfeet and Jingle

I don't think that it is a foregone conclusion this year that the three early leaders will necessarily be in the final - there are some real contenders stepping forward (which I love) and who include all the ones that you have named who I really like too.

Janette has a habit of peaking too early as she tends to get all her specialist dances out of the way in the first few weeks - I think it is sometimes better to get some more challenging ones out of the way early when expectations aren't so high. Having done two very similar dances last week and this, I really want to see what Aston is made of in terms of different styles/moods and particularly some traditional ballroom, which isn't what we saw on the first week - good as it was. Some of Janette's later routines of past series have been dodgy and light on technique with the result of her fizzling out - she needs to be mindful of this in a year where technical content seems high on the agenda.

Alex and Gorka have left me cold, despite the excellent paso routine - I don't wish them the curse of having such a good week 2 routine that they never quite live up to it again. I enjoyed their routine last night more but detected some similar choreography as they did in the week 1 waltz.

For Debbie - I want to see how she copes with the more latin dances. She looked tired last night after the routine (no wonder - it was so fast) and I think Gio has had a habit of doing some fast and furious routines in the last few years when they didn't need to be - so I hope he is mindful of this. I would love to see Debbie in the final and I don't think she can be put in the 'ringer' category quite so much as the other two (just my own opinion). I know she is ballet trained but it was 30 years ago and she is old enough to be the mother of Aston or Alex - I think she has kept herself very fit and flexible which I admire and I think Rufus summed it all up on ITT - whilst some of the mature ladies in recent years have been quite good and lasted until mid way through - Pam Stephenson was the last real contender in this category and I hope Debbie goes all the way and doesn't peak too soon.

Mollie – enjoyed this routine, though there seemed to be a strange leg in the air during the first lift which I wasn’t sure was intentional.

Yes, legs splayed akimbo! I rewatched their routine and liked it more when I could concentrate as opposed to watching it in the background while chatting to people; last night, my overriding impression was Mollie spent too much time in the air - and I still think that a bit - but there was some very nice Foxtrot in there.

Hello everyone, enjoyed reading all your comments. Not much more to add, but *ahem* let me just refer to the notes I made whilst watching... Wink
The ones who stood out for me and got my votes were Joe, Gemma and Susan. I loved Joe's VW and I really hope Gemma continues to improve. I just thought Susan's samba was fun, good job Kevin.
Shouts out to Brian who I thought did well in a very character driven dance which suited him, and Debbie whose QS. I thought was good. I have said all along she's had three relatively easy dances - by that I mean they suit her-and want to see what she'll do with latins. I thought Mollie was a bit unconvincing although the lifts were good. As expected I thought Alexandraand Aston did great dances, really liked them both.
And now to the agins...
What did I write when watching the Rev? John Sargent!!
Charlotte just looks uncomfortable and Brenda doesn't help with his spats...
I'd like both to be in DO and Rev to go...
The others...a bit meh, not their dances
Over and out.

Strictly 17 A little bit of Honesty - Page 7 Empty Re: Strictly 17 A little bit of Honesty

Post  Twirlie Sun Oct 08, 2017 3:43 pm

Hi all –

I had a problem with perspective this week and had to watch the whole show again to be able to step back from my growing loathing of Shirley before I could write this out.

A good fun opening number I thought. Moving all around the studio with the dance was a good idea.

Simon and Karen
Didn’t pay enough attention first time round. Mrs Twirlie and I were spending too much time talking about everyone’s ages! Did they look old or young. Anyway I looked at it after the show and thought he did OK. Not spectacular but not dire.

Ruth and Housewives choice
NOT embarrassing! One of the most important things in a Rumba from a lay person’s point of view!   I thought she did not too badly. She looked good and managed to give a hint of sexiness with it. I can understand the C.raig being a bit critical. Darcy and B.runo were critical with a bit of encouragement included. Shirley did a real hatched job. Ruth was ready for a bit more encouragement for next week and what she got was completely slated for not doing certain dance moves WHICH WEREN’T IN THE CHOREOGRAPHY! Shirley is definitely getting on my whatsits. She was much too disparaging in my view and good on A.nton for lightening the proceedings.

Molly and AJ
The routine filled up the time with the lifts but no much dancing it seemed to me. Not impressed AJ. She was quite good otherwise. I suppose ‘cos she’s not one of my favourites I find it hard to get enthusiastic about her. I still l wouldn’t have given them anywhere near an eight.

Richard and Dianne
This was everything that is embarrassing about Movie Week. How can you take anyone seriously who’s dressed like that. The wardrobe department should have been shot for the cut of those trousers. So ugly. Plus awful dancing. I’m totally with C.raig this week

Debbie and Giovanni
I really enjoyed this.  Debbie is very slick and Giovanni is a great choreographer.  Shirley really is getting on my t**s.  They didn’t take a lot of time at the beginning of the number, much less than many others. And what’s this about a 10 second rule? Why haven’t we heard of this in the last 15 seasons?

Brian and Amy
A very good fun dance. “Charming characterisation” said Tess – and she was right. I thought they deserved all the praise they got and certainly deserved their marks.

Gemma and Aljaz
She looked fabulous. Reclining on a log at the opening of the number, she was sex on a stick! She has a good figure and isn’t worried about showing it off. I agree there did seemed to be a lack of swivel, but lots of fun and energy. I don’t begrudge her the marks at all. But then I’m biased – she’s one of my favourites.

Charlotte and Brendan
She did well, though it was a funny ending. What is up with the judges this week?  I don’t think she deserved all those fours. I didn’t mind Brendan speaking up this time. I wish somebody would put that vile Shirley in her place. And as for B.runo saying he should be more respectful, well respect is a two way street and it doesn’t always flow from the judge’s desk to the celebs! Poor Charlotte. I don’t think she’s enjoying her Strictly j.ourney much.

Jonnie and Oti
Well he’s trying and he’s improving. It was a great routine. I’m still amazed at how much he can do with a false leg. Walking and even running in one direction is one thing, moving sideways about the floor and swivelling on a foot is quite another. I don’t think he’s reached his ceiling yet. I confess I actually found myself watching him more than Oti. That’s a first!

Susan and Kevin
This should have been a truly horrendous number but Susan Calman totally rocked it! It reminded me of Ed Balls Gangnam Salsa. Awful but wonderful. She was totally in charge and I loved the fact that Kevin was the one doing the floor spin!!

Joe and Katya
Very beautiful even though I found it hard to take may eyes off Katya. They deserved their marks I suppose. I’m afraid I find him charmless and bland.

Aston and Janette
Very, very good but it left me a bit cold. It seems I’m inclining towards the school of thought that he might just be a bit too good. Some winners such as Jay McGuinness, Kara Tointon and Jill Halfpenny were in the top half of the leaderboard much of the time.  Others such as Mark Ramprekash, Chris Hollins, Abby Clancy and Ore Oduba have very much come from behind. None of them were this incredibly good, incredibly confident this early on. Even if he gets to the final, which he should do, I’m not sure he’ll get enough of the viewer vote to win.

Alexandra and Gorka
Soooooo romantic! I’ve a terrific soft spot for this number and I thought Alexandra and Gorka made a terrific job of it. Very smooth indeed. I’ve no idea what the arms thing was all about, but it was a gorgeous, gorgeous routine to a fabulous song. My favourite of the night!

Davood and Nadiya
Mmm – Nadiya’s fantastic and hard to take your eyes off. Isn’t he meant to be a bit more straight legged than that? And a bit more upright? Didn’t really enjoy it and didn’t think much of his time on the Judge’s desk. It seemed pretty unnecessary to me.

God – another week of Grumpy Old Man!!!!! I didn’t know what to make of the judges. Marks seemed to have gone down this week. Some of them very low indeed. As you can tell, I’m not very happy with Shirley. C.raig, B.runo and Darcy, whether they have had favourites or not, have always marked pretty fairly. It seems to me that Shirley has developed likes and dislikes among the celebs/dancers and it is affecting her marks and critiques which I’m finding fairly tedious now. She’s becoming more schoolmarm-ish each week. Come back L.en – all is forgiven!

Catching up on i-player and deciding I need mini breaks so pausing and coming here to share a little bit of honesty every 4 routines or so... (Doing it without reading anyones else post - will catch with all those after Smile )

Warning: The first chapter of War and Peace follows - you will need a cuppa and probably three biccies to get through it...

Simon - gotta love him.  He just needs to lighten up (I don't necessarily mean on his feet - just when he dances). It's all a bit tense.  Also, themes weeks rarely work well and thoiugh this wasn;t the worst tune of the night for fitting the dance, it wasn't great.

Ruth - a Rumba I didn;t have to watch from behind my fingers.  Go Ruth! (and Housewives choice for a classy routine). No she lacked hip action, but had she had some I would have really enjoyed this.  Loved her dress and her hair really suited her - ditch the fringe and straightened hair Ruth - grow it a bit and let some natural (or unnatural if necessary..)  curl take over.  You looked luscious Smile

Molly - I think the judges saw a different dance to me.  It was fine, absolutley fine, but not particularly special or wowing.  Underwhelming really. Strange tune to pick from all that the Sound of Music offers.. Couldn't tell what dance the AS was based on, eg a waltz, VW, Foxtrot etc. But still, pleased for them that their good partnership has been noticed.

The Rev - oh dear.  But even The Raspberry Haired One failed to convincingly dance a paso this tune - all that rolling aroud on the floor she did at the beginning and general stomping around to no paso beat whatsever.  And fair dos, it wasn't a comedy routine so she's safe from the Agin team for the moment.  Another case of being awarded the same points from some judges as they awarded others who in my opinion deserved that mark where the Rev didn't.

Debbie- funnily enough, though less perfect I enjoyed this much more than last weel's waltz.  This could just be (knowing how attire and hair etc affect the performance for me) just because her dress was gorgeous as opposed to last week's net curtain jobbie (hair also good - fitted with the era and whole look).  But I think it was more to do with seeing her having to get out of breath - we all know she can waft along with huge elegance, we know she has astonishing flexibility, and we know she can do haughty paso face, but seeing her trotting around in a jolly fashion was rather joyful.  Also noticed the Ginger nuances Smile. Didn't know about the 10 second rule either but I found myself thinking that the out of hold stuff was lasting FOREVER and I wanted then to get back to pony trotting around in hold again.... (Thought Gio took it well rather than bothering to argue).

Brian - well, I never thought I would say this, but I found this rather charming - nice routine from Amy.  It was an AS so disagreed with Our Shirl that she needed more foxtrot - thought it was recognisably the basic dance behind the AS  than Molly and Aj's was (still don;t know...),  I think B.runo summed up very well what I thought (who'd have thunk it!)

Gemma - like C,raig I missed the basic charleston back and forth step with the swivel, but it was a fun routine and they danced it well.  Again, more underwhelmed than the judges were and i thoguht 8 was going a bit overboard.

Charlotte - more Kelly McGillis than Kelly McGillis... But now tired of the spatting between Brendan and Our Shirl in particular.  Being protective is good (like Housewives choice was with Ruth) but doing it confrontationally doesn't help.  Basically I thought Charlotte looked phenomenal, so she won that battle, but she is very wobbly - like a flower on a slender stem in breeze - so she very much lost that battle, ie the one for doing a good tango.

Jonnie - I wanted to love this - as Our Shirl said, a great routine from Oti, and what's not to love about Jonnie as Indiana Jones *inserts non-existent emoticon for 'smokin'...* (top marks there...)  But...   Like the judges I noticed that his stance/shaping wasn't quite right and it looked just a tad awkward. But I also noticed that he was leading…

Susan – Well, go Susan!  I even noticed some Samba bounce (even if C.raig didn’t).  What I did notice is that, though she works very hard with her upper body and with trying to do the steps and technique and the characterisation etc, but her feet hardly leave the floor…

Joe – oh, utterly charming .  Loved this. And Big thumbs up for Katya’s beautiful Russian outfit (there’s half the marks there….) Least said about Joe’s blouse and Dolmio Man moustache the better…  Only thing I would say is that though he was leading he did seem to push and pull Katya a little bit too hard.

Aston – Hmm…..  As you know, I enjoy the ringers in the first few weeks to keep me entertained.  And I could tell this was technically on the money.  Even the music felt vaguely appropriate. But I felt little or no joy.  The outfits detracted greatly from the dancing and I couldn’t stop thinking what skinny little legs Aston had in those turquoise tights…. I couldn’t see his hip action at all though I knew he must have some.  Not for me. (I think I may just not be a fan of Janette’s choreography Smile

Alex – Gorka!  Gorka in a flat cap – yes please! Agree with B.runo (again!) about her being the acting dancer.  I wasn’t struck on the routine though – just thought it could have been so much more…. More…..  wel, just more.  The bits out of hold were a bit faffy really and could have been more lyrical. (sorry Gorka – love you, love your flat cap, but felt your choreography was a bit flat this week)

So, dance of the night was Joe’s.  Underwhelmed by so many others and truly appalled by the Rev – not so much his fault than the fault of the curse of a themed week with a rubbish music choice (though even if they had had a traditional paso tune I don’t think h ewould have done much better – but Amy would have…)

Loooooooonnnnnnngggg!!

But lastly – the VT’s. If they are not going to give any genuine training footage and info (like they did in the early series) then please desist. They are a waste of the nation’s time and the licence payer’s fee. Producers take heed.  For once in your life…. (otherwise it will be to the Tower with you. Or even deportation…)

Edit: Oops! I forgot Davood! I actually stopped the i=player after Alex and started to read your posts - then realised that I hadn;t watched Davood! (As an aside I watched them on ITT and YASB now has two agins - she is quite, quite arrogant...) Anyway...

Davood - the dance I've enjoyed most of his. Not convinced about turning any latin dance into a disco turn but however.... Competent but not wonderful. I can see that Davood is very pretty but he really isn't my type and I found all the gyrations a bit unecessary without making me come over all unecessary. YASB looked like Kim Basinger wearing the Woman in Red's dress - nice. (but she is still winning on the Agins....)

Well, it was C.raig's rule really...

Although I didn't know how long you were allowed ot be out of hold, I did know that you could only be out of hold for a small percentage of any ballroom dance, unless it is an AS. And I only know that from watching Strictly (I have no other ballroom reference), so it must have been mentioned at other times in other series.  But didn't know it was 10 seconds...

Lot of evil looks towards Our Shirl from folk here. I'm still straddling the fence.  My main critism is her inconsistency.  B.runo consistenly marks 1 higher than the median.  C.raig one lower.  D,arcy and L.en were usually in the middle of the two, though occasionally either of them could go with eihter B.runo or C,raig.  But if C.raig gives a 5 and even D.arcy gives a 6, what is it with an 8 from Our Shirl?  There were two or three people I thought she overmarked. And I am going to have to watch back Charlotte's dance again, along with the judge's comments as everyone here seems to think she was treated grossly unfairly both with marks and comments.  I was just awestruck by her Kelly McGillis-ness and the way wardrobe had turned Kelly's shirt n skirt look into a sexy tango number and didn't really notice much else at all.  I remember thinking the motorbike was annoying and in the way, I don;t remember Brenda at all, and I remember thinking she was a wind-blown flower - utterly delicate and beautiful on her long stem, but not very stable.  But perhaps I got that all wrong...

Oh - and who knew that b.iccies would become bicycle!

It seems to me that Shirley has developed likes and dislikes among the celebs/dancers and it is affecting her marks and critiques which I’m finding fairly tedious now. She’s becoming more schoolmarm-ish each week. Come back L.en – all is forgiven!

Twirlie - I love your comments about Shirley (oops rhyming couplet!! lol! ) made me smile - I am in agreement - I've also highlighted your paragraphs about Ruth and A nton, Debbie and Giovanni and about C harlotte and B rendan - I second what you say.

I am glad Rev is gone he just seemed to bring the same old same old same old .

OHh I like Shirley ! But have no clue about dancing or content so maybe I am not getting what  others are

Yes!!! That's totally it! bounce

Re the Rev - I'm not actively glad he has gone, but he was easily the worst dancer of all 3 weeks, with little or no improvement. And though the poor music didn;t help eihter him or his partner I don't believe he would have done any better with a more Paso-friendly tune. If someone has to go - whihc they do because nobody wants to play by my rules Wink - then it was right that it was him. Bless him....

I'm fond of "Twitter Rev" but the novelty value of "Strictly Rev" quickly wore off so I'm not devastated to see him leave, as lovely as he is. I don't think the Ed Balls comparisons helped - gave him too much to live up to.

I wonder if going out so early's made him question his faith Very Happy

And I am going to have to watch back Charlotte's dance again, along with the judge's comments as everyone here seems to think she was treated grossly unfairly both with marks and comments

I thought the comments and marks were fair, diamonds. I feel like Brendan's interjections created a perception she'd been treated more severely than she was. He'd been shaping something of a "victim narrative" for Charlotte since last week. Ruth got more of a savaging but her and A.nton just bat it off with good humour and crack on.

I felt like when Charlotte was saved tonight, her lips were mouthing "Thank you" but her eyes were screaming "I hate you, voters!"

They'll all realise soon enough, in their charming innocence ( the contestants that is) that it isn't just about dancing Sid. It isn't "even" about dancing most of the time. Wink

Alexandra – surprised none of the judges mentioned her shoulders rising up in places (maybe it was just the jacket she was wearing)
Mrs Twirlie remarked on that too jingle. I had a look at it again in the clips section of the Strictly site. Yes, the coat with the puffed sleeves does tend to make the shoulders look high, but she definitely was high at 0.28. They were raised again at 0.58 for a few seconds and again at 1.11. The last two though I think had more to do with acting than anything else. The one at 0.58 was a sort of "Really? For me?" sigh in receipt of the rose. The raise at 1.11 was more of a snuggle into Gorka's arms. It gave a child-like appearance of enjoying being looked after, which is what the romance of the dance was about I think.

So the Rev has gone. That was the right decision given how poor he has been dance-wise. The comedy acts normally have a longer shelf-life but I guess he grated more than previous comedy acts and so lacked public support.

The fact that Simon was in the dance-off says he lacks the public support needed to carry him through the early weeks. He needs to improve very quickly now or else he could be the next to exit.

I'd love him to improve C.C, because I feel he's genuine, but somehow I doubt he has the grace factor to do that. His dancing is a bit "lumpy", more Captain Hook than Peter Pan if you will. Running at the camera he looked almost like somebody trying to catch the last train to San Fenando....sort of...Mind you, that purple turnip outfit they gave him didn't exactly do him any favours. I hope he gets a couple of weeks, but ....
