The sublime: Quickstep to Ella

The ridiculous: Foxtrot to Monty Python

The divine: Waltz to Louis (fully expect large quantities of dust particles getting in my eyes during that)

The fabulous; cha x 3 to Miriam (an eternal favourite of mine - and she had some moves too)

The camptastic party fun: Samba to Gloria

The bonkers (but it might just work): Cha x 3 to Daði

The distinctly meh: everything else

Not sure if its just me being the skeptic but you kind of feel who the producers are trying to mould as contenders each year as they land prime partner and prime music for dances whereas the lesser hopefuls get thrown much weaker options. Thia year early signs are that it is Maisie Smith and Jason Bell.

I think there is a good choice of tunes this week but there's one or two that I'm not sure of from a rhythm point of view.

I like Harvey's jive music and think this should be good.

I like the slower Pata Pata tune for Bill's cha-cha-cha

Although I love that song, I'm not sure about JJ's waltz to Louis Armstrong from a rhythm point of view.

Not sure about a tango to James Bay, or a Paso to Beyonce but Gio will come up with something watchable as it's mostly focussed around the male.

A quickstep for Nicola is tough for week 1, but Ella's Get Happy seems slightly slower so I'm interested to see what Katya cooks up.

Clara and Alijaz have a good track for a cha-cha.

A normal waltz should be slow.  Very slow.  It's the VW that is quicker, but I often feel Strictly often gives tunes more suited to a VW to the Waltz, just slightly slowed down, so this real waltz time seems slow in comparison.

Natalie and Ainsley did a waltz to Wonderful World (GORGE-USS dress!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6TyIgDxXe0 , and I have great hopes of Amy's choreography.

And although this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJsBHsMaN0k is an AS, it is a waltz-based one.  So there are quite a few instances of using this tune for a waltz...

I think Wonderful World is going to wonderful!

Well a mixed bag for week 2

Caroline has lucked out with some traditional Paso music.

Clara's got a good one for her V.Waltz

A fast salsa for Jason, but he's got rhythm so should suit him

A traditional crooner tune for Jaimee's A Smooth so Karen should be able to steer him through (hopefully with his feet more on the floor than off)

I had to do a double take for Ranvir's quickstep tune. I rechecked the Beeb site and that's what it said, unless there's a different version.

Jacqui - a good tune to make toast too (I bet Tom could've done a good samba in the day).

The battle of the quicksteps this week

Berlimey! I reckon Sir Tom would have had some moves if Strictly existed back then (or we did a Back to the Future stunt and scooped him up from 1968 or whenever this was...)

Hmm - who would he be partnered with? Torn between Welsh Amy or Oti...

Another mixed bag I think and missed opportunities.

I think Nicola has a good song for that dance. Don't see HRVY's dance suiting Don't Go Breaking My Heart and since when was the Star Wars Theme a Paso Doble song? Bill's Paso music is only marginally better. JJ has a great piece of music there. Decent music for Foxtrot for Ranvir. Not sure about Maisie's music for American Smooth. Clara has good music but does it suit a Tango? The two Couples Choices are fair game so they should be fine but Jaimie's music doesn't seem like Charleston-esque music.

Gracious me! That Hercules song is atrocious. Not just for a Charleston, for anything. When you think of all the charleston-y tunes around from de fillums and they choose a totally rubbish song from one of Disney's least finest hours.

Didn't take me long did it - euphoric to grumpy bah humbug in just over 2 weeks... lol!

I am committed to my VW to Adante Adante (Giovanni got the gig because he has done wonders with Ranvir and I think he is one of the best teachers Strictly has ever had apart form Natalie), but next week I shall be dancing the Charleston to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPxmvZBFZcs (maybe without the interruption of the conductor...). I shall of course be taking the role of Jack Lemmon... Johannes is the partner for that

Nicola - good music for a jive if it gets speeded up a bit.

Hrvy - I can hear a sloooooooow cha-cha in there, but no doubt this will be speeded up on the night.

Jason - I can't remember which dance Kevin did this; maybe another couples choice? Can't imagine a Paso to it, and seeing the male is the Paso lead, I think Jason may struggle. Hope I'm wrong.

Bill - I think Oti could make a Paso to this. Again, Bill will be officially leading the dance so I hope he can bend into those Spanish lines.

JJ - Who doesn't like Butch Cassidy? The best tune I think and foxtrot perfect.

Ranvir - Gio would probably come up with a decent foxtrot to 'Mr Boobastic' and get away with it. Ranvir's in hold so should be fairly safe.

Maisie - Looking forward to seeing what Gorka designs. I guess it'll be something foxtrot based with a couple of low lifts in. Has potential

Clara - this tune was used fairly recently I think? I can see a tango in there. Alijaz is a good allrounder so Clara should be in good hands

Max - will this be a street dance? The mind boggles.

Caroline - I'm guessing this will be theatre/jazz style? Will this be Caroline's breakthrough week?  Chance to put her acting skills into play?

Jaimee - No. Just no.

Tickets for toastville based on the tunes, I'd line up Jason, Jaimee and possibly Max unless Max does a CC around something Cr aig loves.

On the whole a good set of music there. I'd worry even more now for Jamie with a Samba but he does have a cracking piece of music for it. Also a little concerned for Bill with a couples choice.

2020 Weekly Dance & Music Choices Empty Re: 2020 Weekly Dance & Music Choices

Post  diamondsandpearls Wed Nov 11, 2020 8:39 pm

I feel old.

Ihave no idea who BTS are.  I watched the video.  I still don't.  BTS = Boys Too Small? (Like, they are only 11. Surely?)

On the bright side, it's a banger, and should work well with RV tossing Janette into the air like he's in a juggling competition.

Some great latin tunes in that collection - Ranvir's is particularly ravishing.

Caroline's song has been used five times (count em..yes, FIVE) before. Brendan and Natasha, Mark and Karen, Helen and Aljaz, Denise and James and Nadiya and Davood.  Helen easily had the best dress, so she won outright for me anyway, but I think Aljaz's routine is the nicest and Helen's performance balances just the right of acting and emotion (Denise's emoting could be seen from space).  My point being that there are tons and tons of comparisons, which is never good.  It's a lovely song to be sure, but there are oodles of lovely songs to bang out a beautiful waltz to.  Very lazy producers...

I feel that Stand By Me is going to produce a very earnest AS, rather than something light and fluffy which is what I personally want from an AS. It is Fred and Ginger personified. A souffle of a dance - all light and fluffy but demanding a great deal of technique to bring it off perfectly. I do feel Nicola needs to show us not so much her 'softer' side, but her lighthearted side. The QS was the nearest glimpse we had of that. And I want to see lightness in her feet too.

Boogey woogle bugle boy - the Christina Ag/Andrews Sis video couldnt be found, so I can't comment on it or compare it to the Bette Midler, but taking Bette's one on it's own... I LOVED it! And thought it right-paced for a jive. We shall see,,,,

Post  B4p Wed Nov 11, 2020 10:16 pm

Music

Caroline - More pained looks and waft-fest predicted. Should be reasonably safe in hold. I may be being a bit brutal, but I find that song incredibly boring. Maybe I've just heard it too many times.

Max - Love the song. I'm guessing it will be a foxtrot based A.Smooth. I think Max will struggle with steps, posture, leading and lifts but we'll see.

Nicola - Love the song. We know from ITT that Katya has been doing the lifts and I guess she'll lead in hold. Wait and see.

HRVY - lucked out with that BTS song (my offspring is a massive fan). BTS have a huge following around the world. Very talented musicians, dancers and singers. When you look at HRVY's previous stage dances, they're all Salsa based, so he's already had training in a lot of Salsa basics. Janette is a Salsa champion. Unless he falls flat on his face, this has the potential to be his strongest dance so far.

Jamie - Big Gypsy Kings fan. Love Bamboleo. Great tune for a Samba. He'll probably be dressed as a Mariachi so the performance is potentially there after last weeks Hercules. I don't hold out much hope for him managing the different rhythms or technicalities.

JJ - Great tune for a Jive but it's been done to death. No doubt he'll be in uniform. Not sure how much his disabilities will affect his jive style this week.

Maisie - I like Cyndi Lauper but I can't hear an immediate Cha-Cha there, but no doubt the band will soup it up into the right timings. It'll be interesting to see the rivalry between Gio and Gorka choreographing the same dance this week.

Ranvir - Big Santana fan. Great tune for a Cha-Cha. Should be great. Really looking forward to it

Clara - Looking forward to seeing what Alijaz comes up with. Could be a good tune for a traditional Charleston

Bill - Good rhythmic tune. Can't wait to see what choreography Oti comes up with. I'm guessing they'll be a lot of side by side where synchronisation is key. Bill's got musical timing so fingers crossed.

The rest, I'm too old-fashioned and traditional to pretend.Let' face it, and I don't mind being laughed at.Fred and Ginger are archive stuff to most, Ariana who? just to think all those wonderful songs in the great American song books of Berlin, Cole Porter, Rogers and Hammerstein, Hart and the rest. Was there ever a song written to compare with "Some Enchanted Evening"? Very Happy
