Back in the days when I was just a young jiver, we used to dance to "Tight like that" and "Whistling Rufus" by Chris Barber's band. He had Monty Sunshine in it and the banjo player was Lonnie Donegan.......Who? you might be forgiven for asking. Very Happy

How did Maisie and Gorka get Couples Choice in the semi final??? Mad

By the law of fairness Ranvir and Gio should have been allowed it, then all the couples would have had a go, however, I do concede that Maisie has done her fair share of both ballroom and latin and do hope that doing Street dance after a long line of seeing similar routines over the weeks won't backfire for them.

B4P - I agree about Jamie's combination. Ranvir will need to deliver a faultless waltz. I think Bill's got the popular choice on music - I can't wait to hear Metallica on SCD!!!

Only You a Rumba? Really? A twirly whirly waltz surely?

Another day of sun is a stonking tune but I see it as much more theatre/modern jazz/tap than charleston.

I have had the Bill Bailey Won't You Please Come Home song in my head every time they mention Bill so I am very pleased he gets to dance it it. I have heard a different version to this (amongst others there is a recording from 1902 - it's a very old song! But the one I am most familiar with is one by the aptly named Pearl Bailey); this one sounds more like a QS to me, but I concede a Charleston will just about fit.

Ranvir has two incredibly appropriate songs for the dances she is doing. There won't be a dry eye in the house when she does an emotional, tender, romantic waltz to the Romeo and Juliet theme (the very old Franco Zefferelli one)/Our Tune/Sunday Love Songs theme. And Candyman is very good jive fodder - though it is more wartime swing/jitterbug than 50's jive But still. It works!

In what world is a country and western song a QS? And we are SO going to get a disco salsa to Last Dance (HUGE eye roll..)

But a Thousand Years is great for a Maisie Waltz and any song at all will do for couples choice, so... who really cares what it is?

And thereby hangs a tale. What is a faultless waltz? For me it needs to be easy, devoid of stiffness and in truth, as far away from any form of staccato, in other words, it needs to be a feel-good, rythmic, musical swing/float around the floor done for pure enjoyment. Erin and A nton have demonstrated many time what I mean. The very thought of freezing, nerves, mistakes and all the text-book faults C raig can sum up is the total opposite of the sheer joy of the dance and could totally kill it. I just hope Gio thinks that way and not about just winning.

While I'm on song and on Rhumba) ...

"No me vivir con ella, pero con ella tampoco." This translates,  In a line from a Spanish rumba I learned ( one of Julio's)when studying Spanish , as "I can't live with her, but I can't live without her either!" it explains Rumba perfectly. Rumba isn't strictly a dance of love, but one of the highs, lows and complexities of it portrayed in dance. The opening song line is :Es por culpa una Hembra (It's all the fault of a woman!") sets he mood as less than pure romantic. Hope this helps.pirat

I wish they would not announce the Showdance music in advance. I'm sure that they didn't used to do this? Or am I wrong? We get no surprises in the Final anymore, I wish they would just let us have one........

So if Maisie and Gorka are also doing the quickstep we will have two quicksteps in the Final!!! I sincerely hope there won't be anymore Street n umbers, although I agree Bill and Oti's was one of the best of the bunch.

Rapper's Delight, Street dance? Is this a Strictly final or Burn the Floor? Sorry, I hope the results turn out better than I can imagine. I wanted Waltz, (quickstep ) and samba in there with one of the fiery ones, Tango or Paso.....ah well, on with it. santa

It is frustrating and sad seeing all of these Street Routines in the final of Strictly. There is no need for them in Strictly especially when they begin encroaching on and taking over from the more traditional dances that provide far more of a test. It is also unfair as it is a blank canvas - a showdance with no parameters which couples can use as a wildcard whilst other couples have to go through the turmoils of learning the techniques of other dances. Sadly, I do not see this trend stopping at all. Deeply frustrating also as to the untrained eye they are very difficult to judge.

I couldn't agree more, I really really really don't want to watch street dances in the final of a ballroom/latin dance competition Evil or Very Mad
In fact it sounds like virtually every dance is going to involve couples charging around the floor, with Maisie now revealing her ballroom will be quickstep (same as Bill). Like Fifty, I would've much preferred to see her tango again, or her Frozen themed American smooth.
Agree 100% with Mauve, it feels like we're being royally short changed

I think L en G took the ballroom dance rule book home with him when he retired, or maybe tore it up altogether. I wonder what his views on the current scene are? It's all so far from just getting up and dancing to whatever the band was playing at the Palais. " Quo Vadis?" ( Whither goest thou) might well apply to the dance world in general. You dancing? Wink

P.S Masie and Gorka have a good programme and a samba has appeared at last. Still wide open but......

I don't know about anybody else but I feel overdosed on 'Street'. Not a genre I like, and certainly not one I wanted to see again, particularly in the final.

On ITT tonight the Street/Commercial choreographers said that they'd created 3 of Jamie's dances. I think if you've got past the quarter-finals, then outside help shouldn't be needed for the semi's or final.

Show Dances - On ITT
Bill's has some Paso/Tango influences
Jamie's jumping around again (don't think they had the memo about doing another ballroom)
HRVY's doing a Cuban Salsa/Disco dance
Maisie is doing a Hollywood A.Smooth style

Oh my! I guess im the same thinking Why oh Why are we having "Street Dance" in the final?
This year I have really missed Ballroom Dances, American Smooth, VW, The Waltz. Ive missed the Long Tail Jackets and the gorgeous frothy frocks worn. Missed the lovely songs chosen for these..Ive missed the lifts in the AS and the judges squabbling re illegal lift or not etc.
Our L.en Im sure would have turned purple & his Walnuts been truly boiled not just pickled.
A right faff and where is the content of The Waltz, AS, VW?
Not happy at all re couples choice knocking out traditional dances.
Put Couples Choice in for one week let everyone get it out their system or as Robin Windsor adv for the QF only.

please, please bring back Ballroom dances nxt year. .
Maybe a Ballroom Week and then a Latin Week. All can choose diff dance within catogory.

Crazy, crazy times.

Post  TANGOLERO Thu Dec 17, 2020 1:49 pm

I think I've got it sorted. The final show will actually be a crowd-thrilling version of The Greatest Dancer meets Burn the Floor, meets Strictly. I reckon contestants with no previous ballroom experience will find modern/contemporary street dance easier than un-learning ballroom and Latin.

With Karen and Janette in competition, frantic won't be just a word as they try to out-do each other in triple toe-loop cartwheels and eye-watering splits. Maisie and Gorka will tear around a road-runner quickstep so bewilderingly fast even C raig won't be able to spot errors. ( He's emerged this year as the best of the judges for me)

That just leaves Bill to restore some dance sanity. I'm not sure just how much crowd supports the other three have in reality and I think Bill might be the popular one on the night as he's the least controversial of the four. So, I'm throwing my hat in the ring for Bill. Go Sir William...!

Guess who dashed off a complaint to the beeb last night................. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

If some news sources are to be believed, they have been inundated with comments from disgruntled viewers this week over the Couples Choice thing in the Final. Some of the quotes I saw on some news sites could have been straight from our forum Shocked Shocked

Too late now of course to right what seems like someone's 'vanity project' of what we 'ought' to like this year....... but I do believe you should always make your voice heard.
