No need to race this, it's lovely and rythmic. One from my teens, danced to it many times.

AJ and Kai: Charleston to Don't Bring Lulu by Dorothy Provine, Pinky and The Girls

One from the "Roaring Twenties" T,V,series that starred Dorothy Provine. Should fit the bill.

I didn't even know the Proclaimers had done a version of 'King of the Road'. I only remember the Roger Miller original which I loved as a youngster.

Rhys & Tilly have got classics.

I like John's Samba music.

Tom's is another classic tearjerker and just right for the VW.

Don't like Sara's music again. She seems really trapped by frumpy outfits, wigs and music that even she would battle to break out of.

I'm sure AJ will come up with something dramatic although I'm not familiar with that track.

I'm guessing Rose will be doing a floaty contemporary dance for their C.C.

I think this is the point where the choreography skills of the pros really start to be tested.

Yes agree B4P - choreography definitely very important now and with so many showing a high standard I think it will start to come down to music and dance choices going forward.

Thumbs Up-
Tilly and Nikita - perfect music - hope they can rise to the occasion after last week.
John and Johannes - Love it - I love the brass section, hope that this isn't lost on the show. Hope D+P likes this one.
Rhys and Nancy - Lucky boy and should be very much in his zone. Just hope he doesn't ruin it by putting street or hip hop into 'the' classic Charleston track.
Dan and Nadiya - Crowd pleaser - they should be ok with this one.

Not sure-
Tom and Amy - like the song and it has a strong waltz beat but it is quite slow - not sure if they will speed up the tempo? He needs to lead in a strong way.
Rose and Gio - Presume it will be contemporary? I'm sure he will do something memorable - they need a good week on the leaderboard

Thumbs down-
AJ and Kai - Not my cup of tea at all for a Paso although a nice track - wouldn't see it as a paso in a million years but hopefully they will turn out something good.
Sara and Alijaz- How can this track be used for an Argentine Tango??? Can't see a Tango of any sort albeit this is a lovely song. Stitch up? I fear for them a bit. A challenging dance to a weird music choice.

I agree very much with mauve about the music for the paso and the Argentine tango.

I LOVE the music for John and Johannes...BUT... it sounds very, very, very Cuban, not Brazilian. Cuba is home of the Salsa and Cha Cha Cha, and Brazil is home of the Samba. Not all Latin American music sounds the same and it is a lazy to lump it all in together. Gorka and Maisie or Gorka and Alex dancing a Salsa to this tune would send me into seventh heaven. But it is not a tune that invites a samba bounce.

Iris by the Googoo dolls does have a proper swoopy VW vibe but it is always used for those first dance at a wedding videos that people put up on youtube and is just hackneyed and cliched now. I want something more sophisticated please.

Otherwise, they're not to bad.

I agree. I don't think they should have CCs on a theme night. It's like a 'get out of jail free' card. How would you mark 2x CCs in a dance-off situation?

AJ has a good tune to waltz too.
I think the Mary Poppins tune is a good rhythm for a V.Waltz.
I'm a bit fed up of hearing Footloose. How many times has that been used? I prefer the line dancing version in the remake.
I'm not sure of Dan's tune for a Charleston.
I don't like Les Mis. it's too dark for me even though I usually like the historical themes

I wish they'd blend the Musicals and Movies together and create a new theme night. It gets so repetitive. A change to the running order is long overdue

Agree 100% - there is so much more they could be doing in the way of themes but they just stick to the same old same old every year and the Musicals and Movies theme would work well if put together I think.

I do think there are some great toons this week!! Very Happy I love hearing Edelweiss - I know it has been used several times previously but it is such a great waltz track that I don't mind. I was wondering why it was not a Viennese Waltz but then I realized that J+J are doing one of those! I like Chim Chim Cheree and I think it will work for a Viennese Waltz but those boys better not do too much out of hold!!!I h! Mad The VW must be mainly done in hold!! I'm sure B4P will agree as you've been commenting a lot on the 'out of hold' ballroom dances in recent weeks.

I hear Quick step for 'Good Morning' rather than a Charleston but as you can overlap the two I think it might be alright provided Dan dances with a bit more 'abandon' - think it will be challenging for him in that respect.

Don't think much of the two Couples Choices music - particularly Tilly and Nikita, not a good choice for them I think. Again, why two 'Couples Choices' when there are perfectly good ballroom and latin dances! I suppose they are rushing to get them all in now as couples fall by the wayside. I still think a 'Couples Choice' Theme night would be brilliant. Get it all out of the way and we would also see some good and entertaining stuff without the 'get out of jail free' element that B4P has mentioned.

Initial thoughts are Dan is in big trouble. Rumba is all about being emotive and expressive and that is not his selling point. Rose and Giovanni's music choice is way off for a Paso Doble. Rhys has ideal music for his Waltz.

Rose and Giovanni: Paso Doble to California Dreamin' by Sia

A part from the fact that Mamas and Papas version of California Dreaming is unbeatable,....a Paso Doble? Who is in charge of music...? What a crackpot choice. I'll reserve comment on a couple that could be great or a disaster...

When I saw the music choices I was quite cross.  Evil or Very Mad

I guess the spotty YTS music apprentice has been let loose again.
If you want to offer up music for a DANCE show - do some research. If you're going to use something current, at least make sure it's got some sort of rhythm! California Dreaming a Paso? Desperado? Is that a hint of Dan's predicament or suitable for a rhythmless Rumba?

I don't mind the occasional covers (if they add something different to the originals), but I do object to newer artists throwing a mish-mash of clips from other people's work together, trying to claim it's something new and innovative. If you're any kind of music fan you can hear bits of older songs threaded through, even with a few verses of rap thrown in. Quite frankly it's annoying.

For example:
the Dua Lipa songs opening 4 lines sounds suspiciously like Holly Valance 'Kiss' which was a cover of the Turkish singer Tarkan's original.
Janelle Monae's is a montage of Prince's 'Kiss', the flavour of Robert Palmer's 'Addicted to Love', with a few Michael Jackson actions thrown in.

Either way, can we please have some decent DANCE music?

No really don't get most of these I'm afraid Evil or Very Mad
Is it my imagination or was the music ok to start off with this year but now its getting steadily worse each week as though they ran out of steam when putting it all together?

I also think it is barmy to expect contestants who are struggling to learn routines and produce high quality at this stage to then have the double whammy of getting a track which bears no relation to the true rhythm of the dance being learned - thus making it even more difficult. I feel a lot of them are being 'tripped up' this week. We can usually expect some lovely dancing as we enter the latter stage of the contest but I feel they will be fighting against their music choices this week in the main. Of course I would be delighted if I am proved wrong!

For me only Rhys and to an extent Tilly have tracks with rhythms that suit the dance choice. Not sure what AJ and Kai's Couples Choice will be - why are the Couples Choices not so upbeat this year as usual??

Worried for Dan and feel this might be his Waterloo - they just seem to pick any old random slow track for a Rhumba these days much as I like Desperado as a song. Really don't get 'California Dreamin' for a paso and can't bear any other version than the incomparable Mamas and Papas. I very much like The 5th but I fear we will get from J+J a big dramatic n umber (which suits the music) but does not capture the flavour and the slightly slower nature of the Argentine Tango - maybe there will be some tweaks to how the band interpret it and I'm genuinely interested in what they come up with for this one.

Waltz - Under the bridges of Paris. - Always loved this song. Dean Martin version. Something incredibly Parisienne romantic about piano accordian music.

Tango Santa Maria - Gotan Project. Love Gotan Project. Have the "Lunatico" Album.

Bamboleo -Gypsy Kings.

Samba - Have you ever danced in the Tropics..Andrew Sisters..

Great music knowledge B4p

Janelle Monae's song (which I love) is a knowing homage to her favourite influences, namely Prince, Micheal Jackson and James Brown (don't think Robert Palmer is in there but Addicted to Love is incredibly Prince-ish anyway). Even the Beatles used a mish mash of influences in their songs - Chuck Berry, Elvis, Buddy Holly and a Classical composer whose name I've forgotten (Bach maybe?).  Most great musicians acknowledge that influences creep into their own songs and that there is no real copyright on combinations of notes and usually can't be bothered with law suits against songs which sound a bit like theirs, and take it as a compliment instead.

I guess it depends what you meand by DANCE...  In the case of Janelle Monae's song, it is being used for a Couple's Choice song, so anything goes (and it is a great dancey dance tune!).  In the case of the others, some of them are dance songs (like Dua Lipas), but to nights out in a club type dancing, rather than ballroom or latin. The Sia one as a cover is a travesty, but in terms of the Paso is more appropriate than the intensely superior original. I think Gio has the skills to make it work (I certainly hope so).

I've given up moaning about the tunes, unless they really don't lend hemselves to the tempo of the dance (like the disco song Sara got for the Argentine Tango) as it is a waste of my breath/typing. And sometimes things work unexpectedly and surprising well (I really liked the Blue Monday tango which I would never have thought would work).

So let's just cross our fingers and

I agree that most of the better artists acknowledge their influences. Crowded House and Rob Thomas for example have created songs in the flavour of Steeley Dan without using their lyrics. It's other's who blatantly copy chunks of other people's lyrics or video styles as something new that I find lazy and annoying.

I remember Billy Joel discussing a group who had used some of his work and passed it off as their own. Billy said something on the lines of yes he could have sued them as it definitely was a copyright infringement, but when he looked more closely at the band, he decided they needed his stuff more than he did, which made me laugh.

I believe if 10% of the original artist's work (sequence of notes or lyrics) is used, then whether it was meant as a tribute or not, it can end up an expensive mistake as Robin Thicke & Parrell Williams found out with 'Blurred Lines' and the 5.3 million dollar lawsuit that followed courtesy of Marvin Gaye's family.

I don't dislike the Monae tune. I'm just not sure how Kai is going to create something for a family show from that particular song, and I pity the poor singer who will have to adapt her lyrics.

[quote="diamondsandpearls"]

Not had a good rant for a while, D & P, so here goes:Very Happy

With me, I've been ignoring lyrics long before Simon Says and Bee Bop a lula classed as music. Every generation since Adam and Eve behave like they have just invented sex and probably always will. In music the use of blatant four-letter words of what are basically rubbish lyrics anyway, somehow behave like sprats catching a whole host of mackerels whose idea of dance is standing still and waving their arms about like rivals for St Vitus. Probably a fair example from way back being:

"There she was just a walking down the street, snapping her fingers and tapping her feet, singing doo wah diddy diddy dum diddy doo." Thank you Manfred Man! Gee, who wouldn't fall for her?

I just have always listened to the rhythms.  If your body reacts, it's dance music, lyrics regardless.  as far as dance is concerned, at least Ballroom and Latin, the great American song books of Berlin, Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Lerner and Loewe, Cole Porter, Rogers and Hammerstein/Hart and dozens more...etc,etc,none of which needed four letter spicing,
should be enough to keep the sex mad wannabe's at bay, but not so. A good point B4p made about a family show, what a joke that really is with lyrics like that.

I'm no prude, but all things in their places. The forties onward and the great era of the Palais de Danse emporiums are long behind us now, but the "I'm a celebrity" garbage we've got in their place shakes a lot of heads besides mine.

Okay, that'll do for now. I don't expect everyone to agree with me.  Change Partners... lol!
