Re: SCD 2019 Weekly Dance & Music Choices
Might have thought week two a wee bit early for Paso Doble. Granted, Espana' Cani is the right music to inspire a matadorial sense of macho (if anybody uses the word "Toreador" I'll clatter em with my castanets, it's "Torero") You can actually go a long way in Paso if you know how to just stand there in pose and look arrogant (Watch the film "Strictly Ballroom" and Antonio Vargas). Austin Healey had it off to a fine art. Most pros tend to bounce themselves frantically around their partner when it isn't necessary; just teach them how to stand, flick an elegant hand and twitch an eyebrow. It works, believe me. And don't forget to stamp by just swinging the leg backwards from the knee, not lifting the knee and crashing it down like a regimental sergeant major trying to crack a walnut. And don't shout "Bravo, like Austen did. It means "well-done" and looks like you're cheering yourself. If you need to shout at all, shout "Hey,Toro" at your partner....Okay, go get your suit of lights on Matador...

Apologies. It may be that Charleston-type music is not what I associate with Take That. Hopefully, it works out for them at the weekend.
The problem I have with it is that it will be a super-slapstick-y charleston. I prefer a more sophisticated one like Natalie and Artem's homage to Josephine Baker or Georgia and Gio's Hot Honey Rag Chicago-inspired charleston (not that a charleston is ever exactly sophisticated, but hopefully you know what I mean...)

Re: SCD 2019 Weekly Dance & Music Choices
Drift along, dance along. I really hope, if we're having musical themes this time, that they put in some music where the dance is recognisable. There are more than enough really great songs and music from the shows that actually get your feet moving just by hearing them rather than doing a Russ Tamblin backwards somersault off a chandelier. I want West Side Story and "America", Some Enchanted Evening, Heather on the Hill, Shall we dance, Let's face the music etc, etc, rather than a Tango to the theme from "633 Squadron" (great music though it is, and played weekly as our football team run out), and if we must have rumba, really test somebody and do it to Ravel's "Bolero" (what a great Paso it would make if somebody had the imagination, imagine the ending... ...Yeah....

Re: SCD 2019 Weekly Dance & Music Choices
Roams, as it has done oft before, from the sublime to the w.t x? I'm all agog ( aghast) to see an American smooth to Seal's "Kiss from a Rose" as I love the song ( still have the C.D.somewhere )although preferring not to think amphetamines, rather romance. It screams "rumba" to me and if they cxxk it up, my vengeance will be terrible to behold!
I really love this sort of accompanied madrigal type music mixed with the ghostly unusual, Scarborough Fair, She moved through the Fair, My Lady D Arbanville etc . I'll withhold comment on the rest till the bell tolls.
Oh, and Paso to "Everybody wants to rule the world"? Somebody needs the sack....

Well...!!
First, my inner pedant has just elbowed me in the ribs and it was a bit painful so to stop it happening again I shall have to gently point out that it is, in fact, Movie Week (not Musicals Week - which happens post Blackpool and pre Semi finals)...
Secondly, as I have already wittered on Twitter, in [i]my[i] head Movie Week is about visiting the sophistication, elegance and glamour of the golden age of Hollywood when some of the dances, eg Waltz, Foxtrot, Jive, Tango, were danced by average joes in a social situation. I categorically do not want to see Trolls, Minions or Pokeman creatures jigging around. G
Thirdly, the few good tunes there are have been squandered on the people whose choreography I don't trust (looking right at you Karen - you will bosh up Cheek to Cheek like no-one else could).
Fourthly, there isn't a fourth point, except that I just like to hold forth...

Thanks Diamonds - I copied it from the Dark Side. I'd forgotten it's Movie week, those 2 (Movie & Musicals) all seem to blur into one for me nowadays. I'll change the heading accordingly.

Quite! I thought that movie week was just that - so, for example, you could have As Time Goes By from Casablanca, which is absolutely not a musical. But increasingly the movie week is using musical movies as their source material - Cabaret, Mary Poppins, Moana, etc. And I thought Musicals week was all about stage musicals (which may or may not have made it to film, eg Cabaret, Chicago). Gah!
And who'da thought the Dark Side would get wrong! (Just goes to show how blurred it is in everyone's mind...)
Thank you for taking my pedantry so well and so gallantly!

The Paso Doble and Charleston pieces of music don't seem to suit the dance for me. Also not sure about 'Kung Fu Fighting' for a Samba and for the third week running Michelle Visage has lucked out on musical choice.
Re: SCD 2019 Weekly Dance & Music Choices
Finally admitting I think I'm losing/lost track of it all. I blame 1960 and all those flower-power, Hi-Ho Silver Lining" types. Born in an era of dance elegante, dance is now, to me, as strange as James Bond as a comedien or Sherlock Holmes with a mobile phone. I'm sick of hearing "It's raining men!",associate about three or four tracks with ballroom dance and shake a baffled, despairing head at the rest. Millenium? Progress? Tattooed men and women in clothes we once gave the ragman, stalk the earth hiding under hoods and feverishly typing one thumb text messages whilst listening to rap-crap as they twitch convulsively on their way to their next Gameboy Warcraft battle . Women persons stomp the boulevards in Doc Marten boots, tights and combat jackets and men arrange their tanning, hair tinting and gym visits around their jobs as personal trainers. What would Dickie Valentine and Frankie Laine ( Cue for "A woman in Love" tango) have made of it, I ask you?
Stick me in a corner with a D ick Barton omnibus, a box of Cherry Liqueur chocolates and "The Best of Lionel Hampton" (we used to jive to "Chase the Chase") C.D and shuffle on....Raining Men..Pfft....

Oooh - these are my FAVOURITE! M&S often have them two for the price of one. And I am not ashamed to say I can eat a whole box in one sitting.

I have three Achilles heels where chocolate is concerned D&P, although I'm trying hard for moderation. They are: The stated Cherry Liqueur chocolates, Chocolate Turkish Delight and Dark Chocolate Bounty bars, all of which can be easily acquired at places like B&M and Home Bargains . Very fortunately I've never been prone to putting weight on till of late (and not over much at that, which can be excused by age) but I don't get carried away......much.

Oh my goodness Tango - we are as one on our preferred chocolate! Again, I often buy those packs of 3 choc Turkish Delight - and manage them all in one sitting. Dark Bounty chocolate bars I can usually manage only one. My teeth are probably dreadful and I could be stting myself up for diabetes but as yet my weight isn't an issue (probably due to my physical hard graft!) So bring on the cherry liqueurs!

Re: SCD 2019 Weekly Dance & Music Choices
Well -
Can't work the two Quickstep songs out.
Gio's got some authentic music yet again (He must be paying that music monitor well).
Not a big Celine Dion fan, but I imagine that track will make a nice floaty contempory dance
My favourite would be the Elton John Jive track for Chris & Karen.
The Señorita track sounds more like a Rumba than a Foxtrot to me but what do I know?
Not a list I'm particularly enamoured with

Re: SCD 2019 Weekly Dance & Music Choices
Questions : Times are decidedly changing at mach speed in "Me-Me Snowflake land", and there's a distinct hint of "Here's the music, make a dance up to it" about these joke music lists..which is all very fine in the broad sense, but then why have strict tempo ( music set in "times" where recognisable mental counting matching rhythms defines the actions) dances ballroom guidelines at all? People learning dance and attending ballroom dance groups aren't going to have personal dance pros tucked away in a wardrobe to set them a weekly routine/choreography;( how many even can do a basic anything in a dance hall despite their professional tuition? ) to follow. (the difference between Strictly and Come Dancing except Strictly (come dancing) , as in ballroom but is actually anything but) It's all drifting away from basics and towards please-yourself contemporary dance which again is fine if that's what people want. So why bother using terms like "waltz, quickstep, foxtrot, cha-cha, etc, when in fact none of them are "traditional" ballroom at all anymore? Even the spectacular dances, like Paso-Doble and Tango are now anything but the traditional dances of Spain and Argentina but more "Star Wars and Dan Dare to music" .....
Ee...its not right ah tell thee Ada....bring back that "Balling the Jack and t' Hokey Cokey!"

I am not too enraptured by those musical choices but Gio and Michelle evidently have scored for the fourth week of four with a very apt piece of music. Perhaps one week they will get to be challenged like dance a Viennese Waltz to 'Knees Up Mother Brown'.
I am not sure about many of the other choices except for An.ton and Emma's Waltz to Send in the Clowns.
Re: SCD 2019 Weekly Dance & Music Choices
No new sentiment, but maybe it's time to have a Cuban Week, or a Spanish week instead of daft Halloween nonsense that's best suited for Cee Beebies of somewhere. The two latin choices this week are the best in there by far. Throw in "America" from West side story (although it's Puero Rican) for great dance music. Bailamos by Enrique Iglesias, , Jennifer Lopez's "Aint it funny" "Guantanamera." Julio's "Begin the Beguine", Malaguena etc, etc....why not?

That would be heaven for me...…...…………………….
I think we're stuck with Hallowe'en but they could do something a bit different - masked ball theme or something - I seriously think that they should shake up the theme nights a bit and try something different. 'Round the World' was a good one a couple of years back. DOI really excelled with their theme nights in the last series there were some quite good ones. I seem to remember one about fairytales or something...……….. can't quite remember except that James J was excellent.
Anyway - not much to add to what you have all said about this weeks music choices - the only one I really think is apt is 'Send in the Clowns' I hope E mma B can break through a bit with this one. Also - Saturday Night's alright for fighting is classic for an SCD jive. I totally agree that Gio and Michelle have lucked out again - whereas I don't know who is choosing Alex and Neil's music?? Fleetwood Mac for a Tango????? And why do they seem to make the Tango's so fast these days?
On the dance front - I think there is a few interesting choices and some will be challenged. Will be interesting to see how ballroom girl Emma W gets on this week.

Re: SCD 2019 Weekly Dance & Music Choices
I dread to think what they'll be dressing Mike up in for this week. I feel Jeremy Vine's wooden horse may be making another appearance. Let's hope Katya comes up with another good idea.
